The true cost of publishing a book(and why it's worth paying)

One of the most common questions aspiring authors ask is: What is the true cost of publishing a book?

The honest answer? It depends...

The cost of publishing a book varies dramatically depending on whether you pursue traditional publishing or self-publishing, the level of professional support you choose, and the quality you expect for your finished product. But one thing is certain...publishing a book professionally is rarely free - despite what some 'experts' will tell you!

If you are self-publishing in the UK (or anywhere else), you should budget for essential services such as professional editing, proofreading, cover design, formatting, and possibly marketing support. These are not “extras.”

They are the difference between a professional book that builds credibility, and one looks like it was published by your 5-year-old niece...just because you can, doesn't mean you should!

Joking aside, typical self-publishing costs might include:

  • Developmental or structural editing

  • Copyediting and proofreading

  • Professional cover design

  • Interior formatting for print and eBook

  • ISBN registration (if applicable)

  • Launch and marketing expenses

While figures vary, investing properly in publishing can range from several hundred to several thousand pounds. That can feel daunting, especially for first-time authors.

But here’s the crucial distinction: cost and value are not the same thing.

A professionally edited and designed book positions you as credible, serious, and trustworthy. Whether you are writing fiction, memoir, or a business book, your book becomes a long-term asset. It can generate income, attract opportunities, build authority, and open doors that a poorly produced book never will.

The real problem isn’t that publishing costs money. The real problem is when authors spend money without understanding what they’re paying for.

Over the last 15 years, as both a writer and a publisher, I have personally paid, and seen writers overpay for unnecessary services, sign contracts they didn’t fully understand, or feel pressured into expensive packages that offered little real value. That’s precisely why clarity matters.

If you understand the genuine cost of publishing a book and what each service should deliver, you can make confident, informed decisions. You can invest wisely rather than emotionally.

Publishing is not cheap. But done properly, it is powerful.

And when you know how to avoid the traps and red flags, it becomes one of the most strategic investments you can make in your writing journey.

If you want a detailed picture of what publishing routes are open to you, and what red flags to avoid, my book 'How to Publish a Book - without getting ripped off' will provide an honest account based on real-life experience so that you can make an informed decision that works for YOU.
